Donna Summer (1948-2012)
Known as the 'Queen of Disco,' Donna Summer won five Grammy Awards and helped define the sound of an entire musical era with hits like 'I Feel Love,' music that filled dance floors well past the years disco was supposedly out of fashion. I'll admit disco was never really my music β give me Patsy Cline and the old hymns any day of the week β but I try to defend the right of young people to like what they like even while I grumble about it, and I recognize genuine talent when I hear folks still talking about somebody's voice fifty years later. Five Grammys is no small thing in any genre, and building the actual sound of an era, one that other musicians are still borrowing from today, takes more than a good beat and a lucky moment. My grandkids play me some of her songs sometimes on that phone app, and even an old woman who prefers a hymn can hear the craft in it.
Donna Karan (b. 1948)
A fashion designer who built the DKNY brand into a household name, Donna Karan later founded the Urban Zen Foundation, which supports wellness, education, and the preservation of cultural traditions around the world. I've never worn a designer label in my life, closest I get is a nice dress for church, but I do understand building something from scratch that lasts, having kept this same forty acres in the family since the 1890s. Karan built a whole brand and then, once she didn't need to build anything else for herself, turned around and put her name behind causes bigger than fashion. That's the part of the story I find myself paying attention to more than the clothes β what somebody chooses to do with success once they've already got more of it than they need. Not everybody makes that turn. Some folks just keep building bigger versions of the same thing for themselves, and never get around to the second part at all.
Donna Strickland (b. 1959)
Donna Strickland, a physicist, was awarded the Nobel Prize for her work on laser technology, becoming only the third woman ever to win the Nobel Prize in Physics, and her research is now used in corrective eye surgery performed on ordinary people every day. I don't pretend to understand the physics here β that's well past anything I picked up in a mill apprenticeship β but I understand the shape of the story: somebody does careful, patient work for years, gets passed over by the recognition machine longer than she should have, and eventually the work speaks loud enough that it can't be ignored. Only the third woman in the history of that prize tells you something about how long that recognition machine has been slow to turn. What gets me is the practical end of it, the eye surgery β this isn't abstract theory sitting in a journal somewhere, it's something that's actually fixed real people's vision. That's the kind of science I can get behind, the kind that ends up doing something for somebody.
