Colin Powell (1937-2021)
Colin Powell rose to four-star general and then became the first Black U.S. Secretary of State, and whatever else people argue about regarding any public servant's career, that climb itself, starting where he started and ending up where he ended up, is the part that impresses me most. I taught in a two-room schoolhouse my whole career and watched plenty of children start out with the deck stacked against them in one way or another; the ones who made it furthest were rarely the loudest or the flashiest, they were the steady ones who kept showing up and doing the next right thing even when nobody special was watching. From everything I've read, that steadiness was Powell's whole reputation before it was ever his title β a man known for being reliable and prepared long before he was known for the rank on his shoulder. I don't know the man, obviously, never will, but I know that kind of quiet discipline when its results show up on paper like that. It usually means somebody did the work nobody saw for years before anybody handed them the credit.
Colin Firth (b. 1960)
I will admit that a specific wet-shirt scene from Pride and Prejudice did more to shape a generation's idea of British romance than anything actually written by Jane Austen, and Colin Firth has spent a career since proving he's a genuinely serious actor and not just That Scene, which is its own kind of quiet victory. The King's Speech is the better argument for that, honestly β such a restrained, contained performance, all that anguish communicated through almost nothing visible on the surface, the opposite of showy. As someone who thinks in terms of composition and negative space for a living, I have real appreciation for a performance built around what's withheld rather than what's shown. It's the harder version of the craft, usually, doing more with less. He won the Oscar for exactly that kind of control, not for the biggest gesture on screen but for the smallest ones landing hardest.

Colin Farrell always struck me as someone who found his real gift after the flash faded a little β I think of him going from loud early roles to the quiet, aching work in In Bruges and later The Banshees of Inisherin, and how much harder it is to hold a room by going smaller instead of bigger. My husband Tom is Irish-American on his father's side, so there's always a little extra warmth in our house when an Irish name comes up, even one from Dublin rather than his family's County Cork. What I respect about Farrell's career is the range β comedy one year, real grief the next β because in hospice work I've learned that people who can sit with both light and heavy moods, sometimes in the same afternoon, are the ones patients trust most. He's clearly become one of those actors people trust with anything. Watching someone mature into their best work later rather than early always makes me a little more patient with my own slow chapters too.
