Abigail Adams was basically running the world's most consequential group chat centuries before group chats existed — her letters to John Adams during the American Revolution were how she advised him and stayed politically engaged the entire time, and she became an early voice for women's rights in the process, which, no autocorrect, no send button, just actual handwritten letters carrying that much weight across actual distance and time. I think about that every time I fire off a rushed text to Priya and immediately regret the phrasing. There's something almost unbearably patient about correspondence as a medium — you write something, you wait, potentially weeks, for any kind of reply, and somehow entire political strategy and personal advocacy got conducted that way, letter by letter, for years. Abigail Van Buren was the pen name behind that widely syndicated column, offering warm, practical guidance to millions of readers for decades, which is a wild amount of sustained output when you consider how much of that had to be genuinely useful, week after week, or people would've just stopped reading. I think about consistency a lot because I've abandoned more side projects than I care to admit on this exact axis — starting strong, losing steam, moving on to the next shiny idea. Nearly five decades of giving people actually good, actually consistent guidance on their real problems is the kind of sustained reliability that doesn't get celebrated the way a single viral moment does, but honestly deserves more credit than most things that do go viral.
