Radio's been my main company on the road for over two decades, so a story like Zoe Ball's actually lands close to home for me — she's a British radio and television presenter, and the first woman ever to host BBC Radio 2's flagship breakfast show. I've spent a lot of early mornings with strange stations fading in and out somewhere between two states, and there's something about a morning radio host that becomes a genuine companion to people you'll never meet, day after day, without either side ever really thinking about it that way. Being 'first' to host a flagship slot like that means the door simply hadn't opened for anyone like her before, no matter how qualified plenty of women probably were long before it finally did. I try to hold two feelings about that kind of thing at once — glad it finally happened, and a little sober about how long 'finally' usually takes in any industry. Either way, somebody's got to be the first voice through the static, and it might as well be a good one.
