Wayne Thiebaud (1920-2021)

Wayne Thiebaud painted cakes and pies and diner counters like they deserved the same serious attention as any grand historical subject, thick, buttery brushstrokes that somehow make a slice of pie look almost architectural, and as a baker I have an enormous, slightly biased soft spot for an artist who took dessert that seriously as a subject worth painting. There's something validating about it, honestly — I spend hours getting a lemon tart's glaze exactly right, and here's a whole respected American painter who apparently understood that the everyday, unglamorous stuff of a bakery case is worth the same careful eye as anything else in a museum. Thiebaud became a defining figure in American art doing exactly that, elevating cakes and pies instead of ignoring them as too ordinary to matter. I've got a print of one of his paintings taped up near our register, actually, mostly because it makes customers smile when they notice it, but also because it's nice having proof, right there on the wall, that somebody important once agreed baked goods deserve real reverence.
