Victoria Azarenka reached the world No. 1 ranking in professional tennis and won two Australian Open titles, known throughout her career for a real tenacity on court that opponents apparently found exhausting to play against, in the best possible sense. I don't follow tennis regularly, but tenacity's a quality I recognize and respect wherever I find it, having spent twenty-two years in a job that's basically one long test of whether you'll keep showing up through bad weather, bad routes, and worse pay some years than others. Reaching No. 1 in an individual sport like tennis means there's nobody else to lean on when things go sideways mid-match — no teammate to cover for you, just your own grit carrying the whole thing across the finish line. That's a lonelier kind of pressure than a team sport puts on a person, and Azarenka apparently handled it well enough to sit at the very top of the world rankings, which isn't a small thing to say about anybody.
