Thelma Schoonmaker (b. 1940)

Thelma Schoonmaker has three Academy Awards for film editing and decades collaborating with Martin Scorsese, and editing strikes me as exactly the kind of essential, invisible labor that keeps a whole production actually working, which I respect because most of my own jobs have been that kind of invisible labor too — the cleaning, the packing, the customer service nobody notices until it's missing. Nobody watches a great movie thinking about the editor, same as nobody thinks about who cleaned their house before company came over, but take that work away and everything falls apart fast. Schoonmaker's been doing that essential, uncredited-feeling work at the highest possible level for decades, and three Oscars means the industry itself eventually had to admit how much the finished product actually depends on her. I appreciate stories about the people holding things together behind the scenes more than the ones who just show up in front of the camera. That's most of the real work in any industry, mine included.
