Sylvia Earle (b. 1935)

Sylvia Earle has led over a hundred ocean expeditions and spent a whole career championing marine conservation, which is the kind of job that actually requires real physical toughness on top of the science — she's not sitting behind a desk theorizing, she's out there, over and over, doing the actual work in a genuinely dangerous environment. I respect that combination a lot: expertise paired with the willingness to keep physically showing up for the hard version of the job, not just the comfortable version. A hundred-plus expeditions means a hundred-plus times deciding to do the difficult thing again instead of resting on the reputation she'd already built after the first few. I don't know much about oceanography, but I know what it looks like when somebody keeps doing the physical grind of a job long after they could've coasted on their name alone. Earle apparently never coasted. That's the part of her story that actually impresses me more than any single title or expedition count.
