Stanley Matthews (1915-2000)

Stanley Matthews was the first person ever to win the Ballon d'Or, football's biggest individual award, and he earned the nickname 'the Wizard of the Dribble,' which honestly sounds like a rejected Harry Potter minor character but was apparently deserved on the actual pitch. Being first at something means there's no blueprint, no highlight reel of previous winners to study — you're just out there setting the bar with no idea where it's supposed to be, which is terrifying in a way that only makes sense to me from bombing on stage with zero comparable acts to learn from beforehand. He also got knighted eventually, which is a career trajectory — 'wizard nickname' to 'actual knighthood' — that even my most ambitious LinkedIn connections haven't managed yet. Soccer's not exactly my sport (cricket and basketball dominate my group chats), but 'first winner of the sport's most prestigious award' is a sentence that speaks for itself in any language, any decade, any fandom.
