Simone Signoret (1921-1985)

Simone Signoret became the first French performer to win an Academy Award, taking the honor for "Room at the Top," which represented a genuine breakthrough for French cinema on the international stage at the time. I find myself drawn to this kind of "first" in any field, having spent my own career among the small number of firsts in mine, and I recognize something of the particular weight that comes with it — the achievement is real and fully earned, and yet it also becomes, whether one intends it or not, a symbol carrying more than any single performance can reasonably hold. Signoret's award opened a door that a great many French actors walked through afterward, which is precisely the quiet, structural kind of legacy I find most worth noting, more than the trophy itself. Being first is its own particular labor, distinct from and often heavier than being merely excellent, and I think it deserves to be named as such rather than folded quietly into the general record of achievement.
