Simon Pegg (b. 1970)

I confess I have not seen a great many zombie comedies, but I understand Simon Pegg is credited with co-writing Shaun of the Dead as well as starring in it, which is a more demanding trick than casual fans of the genre might assume — writing your own material well enough to also perform it convincingly requires a rather different discipline than simply being handed someone else's script. His later work in the Mission: Impossible franchise suggests a performer comfortable moving between scrappy independent comedy and enormous studio productions, which is not a small range to sustain across a career. I spent thirty-eight years training physicists to value precision regardless of the scale of the problem, and I find myself applying the same standard to entertainment: competence at a large scale and competence at a small, clever scale are both legitimate achievements, and it is a mistake to assume the bigger budget is automatically the harder one. My late husband Daniel, a historian, would likely have appreciated Pegg's writing more than the action sequences; I suspect I would have enjoyed both equally, for different reasons.
