Serena Williams (b. 1981)

Serena Williams is straight up one of the greatest tennis players who has ever picked up a racket, twenty-three Grand Slam singles titles, and I don't think people always sit with how insane that number actually is over how many years of competing at the top. That's not one great season, that's sustained dominance across an entire era of the sport, against wave after wave of new competition trying to knock her off. I've had players come through my program who peaked one good year and then plateaued — staying elite that long, that consistently, is honestly harder than getting there once. My daughter just made varsity as a freshman and I've been trying so hard to just be her dad about it and not immediately start coaching her on "the next level," and honestly thinking about Williams's whole career arc helps me remember it's a long road, not one big moment. She built a legacy, not a highlight reel. That's the actual lesson in there for anybody, on or off the court.
