Modern art's never been my thing — give me an old Western over a melting clock any day — but even I recognize Salvador Dalí's name, and The Persistence of Memory is one of those images that gets stuck in your head whether you understand it or not, which I suppose is the whole point of surrealism, or as close as I can get to understanding it. Being one of the most recognizable painters of the entire twentieth century means the man built something that stuck around in people's minds for generations, same as a good union contract sticks around protecting people long after the negotiating table's been cleared out. I don't pretend to get the deeper meaning behind melting clocks and whatever else was going on in his head, but I respect anybody who commits that fully to a strange, original idea instead of just painting what everybody expects to see. Takes a certain kind of stubbornness to stick with something that odd until the rest of the world catches up to you.
