Saint Monica (331-387)

Filed under the name Monica · April 1, 2026

Saint Monica gets remembered, centuries later, mostly for one thing: she didn't give up on her son, even when it took years and years for that devotion to look like it was going anywhere. There's something almost internet-unfriendly about that kind of patience — no updates, no visible progress, just showing up for someone for decades until it finally mattered. My own family is big on faith and even bigger on not giving up on people, especially the ones who take the long way around, so this tracks for me. I think a lot about my grandparents' generation, how much quiet, undocumented persistence went into just getting us here, into being the reason any of us get to have a normal Tuesday in Dearborn. Monica didn't have social media to prove any of it happened. She just kept at it, and it became enough of a story that people are still telling it, what, over a thousand years later. I'd like to be remembered for something that patient someday.
