Saint Lucia (c. 283-304)

Saint Lucia is venerated for her charity toward the poor, and her memory is now kept each December through the Scandinavian Saint Lucy's Day festival of light, candles and all, which is such a beautifully visual way for a legacy to survive across seventeen centuries — an actual ritual built around literal light, still practiced by families every winter. As a designer I'm drawn immediately to that image, the composition of candlelit processions in the depth of a Scandinavian winter, honoring an early Christian martyr's generosity through something so purely visual and sensory. My own mother crossed an ocean as a refugee with almost nothing, and there's something in stories of quiet, sustained charity toward the poor that always lands harder for me since becoming a parent myself, thinking about what gets carried forward and what gets remembered. Saint Lucia's legacy surviving as a literal festival of light, rather than fading into a name in a history book, feels like one of the more genuinely moving ways a life of charity has ever been memorialized.
