Russell Crowe won an Oscar and built a career on commanding, physical performances in movies like Gladiator, and honestly, watching an actor carry a historical epic on his own shoulders reminds me a little of watching somebody carry actual physical weight for a living, which I know plenty about from years of jobs that keep me standing or driving all day. Range across historical epics and character dramas both isn't nothing — that's two very different muscles, being the big commanding presence and also the quieter, more internal one. I don't go to the movies much, ticket prices being what they are and my schedule being what it is, but I've caught his films on TV between shifts over the years. There's a kind of respect I have automatically for performers who look like the work actually cost them something physically, sweat and effort you can see on screen, instead of just standing there looking good. That's the kind of effort I notice.
