Rosalind Elias, an American mezzo-soprano, had a long, celebrated career at the Metropolitan Opera, and 'long' is the word I keep coming back to, because a career that sustained means decades of showing up, night after night, taking care of an instrument that lives entirely inside her own body and had to be protected and maintained the whole time. I spent twenty-eight years as a nurse, twelve-hour shifts on my feet, and I understand something about what it means to keep a body performing reliably at that level for that long, though obviously in a completely different way — hers was her voice, mine was my back and my patience, but both require a kind of sustained discipline that doesn't get talked about much once the applause or the shift ends and everyone goes home. A long opera career at a house as demanding as the Met means somebody took extraordinarily good care of an extraordinarily fragile instrument for decades, through illness and exhaustion and everything else a body goes through over that many years. I recognize that kind of quiet, physical devotion when I see it, whatever field it shows up in.
