Roberto Clemente (1934-1972)

Roberto Clemente is one of those names where the baseball numbers almost undersell the whole picture — a Hall of Fame career that gets talked about in the same breath as his humanitarian work, which is rare for any athlete, in any sport, in any era. I think about that duality visually sometimes: the bright, photographable moments of an all-star career on one side, and on the other this much quieter commitment to communities that mostly never made the highlight reel. He's remembered as a hero on and off the field, and it says something that both halves of that sentence get equal weight decades later instead of one crowding out the other. My husband, a middle school teacher, brings Clemente up sometimes with his students as an example of someone whose legacy outgrew his own sport, and I think that's exactly right — his name carries meaning now for people who couldn't tell you a single one of his stats. That's an unusual, durable kind of impact, the kind design work almost never manages and athletics rarely does either.
