Robert Downey Jr. (b. 1965)

Robert Downey Jr. is famous now for playing Iron Man, but the part of his story that actually means something to me is the comeback — recovering from addiction after years of very public struggle, and rebuilding an entire career and life from that low point. I don't romanticize addiction or the mess that surrounds it; I've watched it wreck people close to me. What I respect is what comes after, the actual unglamorous work of staying sober and putting a life back together when plenty of people would've written you off for good. Downey did that, publicly, with all the scrutiny that comes with being famous, and now supports environmental and recovery-focused causes with the platform he clawed his way back to. Hollywood loves a comeback story because it makes good headlines, but the real accomplishment isn't the box office numbers. It's the years, one at a time, of actually staying on the other side of it. That part doesn't get enough credit.
