I went back to night classes for my associate's degree while I was raising four children and teaching third grade full time, so I have a soft spot for anybody who does their best work later than folks expect. Penelope Fitzgerald won the Booker Prize for her novel 'Offshore,' and from what I understand she came to real literary recognition later in life than most writers do, admired for prose that's precise and full of wit rather than flashy for its own sake. There's a particular kind of patience required to keep at something, quietly, for years, without the world paying much attention yet, and I recognize that patience because it's the same patience it took me to finish my own schooling in fits and starts around everything else life demanded of me. Precision is a word I'd use for good teaching too, honestly — the best lessons aren't the loudest ones, they're the ones built carefully, word by word, until they actually land. I imagine that's what good, precise prose takes as well. Sometimes the quiet, careful work just needs a little more time to get noticed, and that's alright.
