Pearl Kendrick (1890-1980)

As a nurse of nearly thirty years, I have held so many children through fevers and coughs, and I think often about how much suffering was simply normal before people like Pearl Kendrick did the patient, unglamorous laboratory work to change that. She helped create the first vaccine that actually worked against whooping cough, and I think about the parents of my generation's grandparents who lost children to that cough, back when there was nothing anyone could do but sit with the family through the night. My own mother back in Cebu used to tell me about siblings who did not survive childhood, and it was never one dramatic thing, just illnesses we now barely think about because women like Dr. Kendrick did the careful work in a lab that nobody applauds the way they applaud a surgeon. In hospice now I see the ends of long lives, but I never forget that a long life is itself a kind of miracle scientists like her made ordinary. Sipag at tiyaga, we say — diligence and patience. That is her whole story, I think.
