Paul Newman (1925-2008)

Paul Newman founded Newman's Own on the literal principle of donating all the profits to charity, which even now, in an era where every brand claims to be 'giving back' in its marketing copy, is a genuinely rare and pretty wild business model to actually commit to. He ended up giving away hundreds of millions of dollars, including funding camps for seriously ill children, which is way more concrete and useful than a lot of celebrity philanthropy that stays mostly symbolic. I think about how much modern 'charity marketing' feels performative sometimes, a percentage here, a limited campaign there, and Newman's approach was basically the opposite — build the whole company around it and just keep doing it, quietly, for decades, without needing a viral moment to justify it. He was already an acclaimed actor, he didn't need the food company for money or fame. He built it anyway, on purpose, for the giving. That's a legacy that ages really well.
