Oscar Robertson, "The Big O," became in 1962 the first NBA player ever to average a triple-double for an entire season, a feat so rare it wasn't matched again for over fifty years afterward. Fifty years is longer than my bakery, my parents' whole working lives, and probably my grandmother's kitchen combined, and it's a genuinely wild thing to sit with — an entire half-century passing, generations of new players and new training methods arriving, and the bar he set simply held anyway. I think about standards like that in a much smaller way at the bakery, trying to hit the exact same quality on a croissant every single morning regardless of who's on shift that day; consistency at any real level takes far more discipline than people assume from the outside. Robertson apparently set a standard so far ahead of his era that basketball itself needed half a century of evolution just to produce someone who could touch it again.
