Nina Dobrev built her name playing a lead role on "The Vampire Diaries" and has since gone on to a broader career across film and television, which strikes me, watching from a considerable and rather old-fashioned distance from popular culture, as no small feat of career management. My granddaughter is considerably better versed in this particular corner of television than I am, and it was in fact at her insistence that I came to understand quite how devoted an audience that show commanded in its day. Making the leap from a single beloved, genre-specific role into a sustained, varied career is a transition many performers attempt and rather fewer manage cleanly. I find I admire that kind of deliberate, ongoing reinvention rather more than I admire fame that simply happens to a person once and then coasts. Dobrev appears to have treated her early success as a beginning rather than a peak, which is, I think, the harder and more admirable choice.
