Melvin Van Peebles is considered one of the fathers of independent Black cinema, a filmmaker, actor, and musician who built his path outside the usual studio system entirely, financing and making movies on his own terms because the system as it existed wasn't going to hand him the opportunity otherwise. I think about independence like that a lot as an owner-operator myself, having gone from company driver to running my own rig specifically so nobody else could dictate my route or my terms anymore. There's a real cost to building something independent from scratch — longer hours, less safety net, no big studio or big freight company covering you when things go sideways — but there's also a version of ownership and creative control you just can't get any other way. Van Peebles apparently decided that trade-off was worth it, and helped open a road other filmmakers could actually drive down afterward. That's the kind of independent path I understand in my bones, even from a completely different lane of work.
