Matilda of Flanders (c. 1031-1083)

Matilda of Flanders was queen consort of England as William the Conqueror's wife, and she played a real role in medieval Anglo-Norman politics beyond the purely ceremonial version of "queen" that gets remembered easiest. I think about how history compresses complicated women into flat, single-color images — like a portrait with all the shading sanded off — and Matilda's actual political involvement gets lost that way more than it should. As a designer I'm always trying to find the fuller composition in a story instead of the flattest version of it, and medieval royal women in particular tend to get simplified down to just "wife of" when there was clearly a much more textured picture underneath. My own mother crossed an ocean as a refugee to build a life here, and even that story gets simplified by people who didn't live it, so I recognize the pattern of a complicated woman's real involvement getting smoothed over into something simpler and less interesting than what actually happened.
