Marvin Hagler (1954-2021)

Boxing isn't a sport I follow closely, but there's something undeniably sculptural about a fighter's stance at that level, and Marvin Hagler's reputation as one of the greatest in his division's history suggests someone who turned discipline itself into a kind of visible form — the shaved head, the low guard, the relentless forward pressure, all of it reads like a deliberate aesthetic even before you know anything about the wins. Being called the undisputed middleweight champion means holding every version of that title at once, which in a sport this competitive and this political is genuinely rare. I find myself more interested lately in athletes whose bodies of work hold up decades later under a very different, much more design-literate audience — the kind of person, like me, who wasn't watching live and only encounters the archival footage. Even secondhand, footage of him fighting has an unmistakable visual signature, which is its own kind of legacy. My new-parent brain doesn't retain much these days, but that particular image stuck.
