Marie Kondo turned "does this spark joy" into a genuinely global movement, which is a wild business outcome for what started as a very personal, very specific philosophy about folding shirts. I'm deep in FIRE-forum, index-fund, evangelical-about-compound-interest territory myself, and I'll admit decluttering culture and financial-independence culture have more overlap than people think — both are basically about being intentional with what you let take up space in your life, whether that's stuff or spending. My wife Priya has pointed out, accurately, that I apply the "does this spark joy" test to my Roth IRA allocations now, which is probably not what Kondo intended but here we are. There's also just something quietly impressive about taking a niche, culturally specific practice and translating it so cleanly that it became a worldwide phenomenon — that's a hard trick to pull off without losing what made it work in the first place. Kondo managed it. My closet, unfortunately, remains a disaster regardless.
