Maria Montessori was a doctor before she was ever an educator — one of the first women to earn a medical degree in Italy — and it shows in how carefully she built her method, treating a child's learning almost like something to be understood and respected rather than managed. I spent 38 years in a two-room schoolhouse doing my level best with the tools I had, and I'll be honest, I look back and wish I'd known more of what she figured out: that kids do their best learning with their hands, moving, choosing, not just sitting still and being talked at. Thousands of schools around the world still use her method today, which tells you she was onto something true and lasting, not just a trend. I've still got a soft spot for the old ways I was raised on, but a good teacher keeps learning too, right up to the end. Montessori proved that respecting a child is never wasted effort.
