Marcus Samuelsson's whole story reads like a scouting report you'd want to believe but almost don't: Ethiopian-born, raised in Sweden, and now running one of Harlem's most respected restaurants while actively pulling up young chefs from underserved communities behind him. That last part is the piece that gets me every time, honestly, more than the accolades or the restaurant's reputation. I've spent fifteen years running a free summer basketball camp out of my own pocket because somebody did something similar for me once, and I recognize the instinct in Samuelsson immediately — you get to a certain level and either you close the door behind you or you prop it open for the next kid who doesn't have the resources yet. He chose to prop it open, mentoring young cooks who look at his path and see it might actually be possible for them too. That's the real coaching move, if you ask me, more than any single dish on the menu. You don't just win. You make room for the next one to win too.
