👶 Naming for:

Mabel Normand (1892-1930)

Filed under the name Mabel · February 3, 2026

Mabel Normand wrote, directed, and starred in her own silent films at a time when almost no woman in Hollywood was allowed to do any one of those jobs, let alone all three, and she helped shape early screen comedy in the process, which is the kind of foundational, mostly uncredited groundwork I find myself drawn to on these long drives through towns nobody remembers built the interstate. Self-driving truck technology's coming for parts of my own trade eventually, and I try to hold two feelings about that honestly instead of picking one — genuinely fascinated by the engineering, personally aware of what it could mean for guys like me. Normand's story reminds me that plenty of foundational people get written out of the official history books even when their fingerprints are all over what came after. I've got a lot of respect for the ones who built something first, before anybody had a name for what they were doing, and then mostly got forgotten by name while their work kept right on going.
