Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-2021)

Poetry's not exactly my usual reading material, but Lawrence Ferlinghetti co-founding City Lights Bookstore alongside his own writing tells me something I respect: the man didn't just want to be a poet, he wanted to build an actual place where other writers could exist and be read, which is a different, more generous kind of ambition than just chasing your own name in print. Being a central figure in the whole Beat literary movement means he helped build a scene, not just a personal career, same as the guys who built the union up from nothing weren't just looking out for their own paycheck, they were building something that outlasted them. I don't know much Beat poetry myself, and I'll admit I probably wouldn't get half of it if I tried, but running a bookstore that became a genuine literary landmark for decades is the kind of patient, unglamorous institution-building I can respect regardless of what's actually on the shelves.
