Steady is not a word people give enough credit to, but after years anchoring 'PBS NewsHour,' Judy Woodruff earned it the hard way — respected specifically for reporting that was in-depth and, above all, steady, night after night, through whatever the news happened to be that day. I think about steadiness a lot in my own work, because in hospice care, the families I sit with are usually frightened, and what they need most in that moment isn't someone dramatic, it's someone calm and clear who will tell them the truth gently and stay present with it. I imagine there's something similar in delivering the news for that many years — you can't be theatrical about it forever, you have to actually be trustworthy, over and over, long enough that people believe you when it matters most. My daughter is in medical school now, learning her own version of staying calm under pressure for other people's sake, and stories like Woodruff's make me think that quality — patient, sturdy presence — might be one of the most underrated gifts a person can offer the people depending on them.
