Joshua Bell has performed with the world's leading orchestras since childhood, and what I find most admirable is how deliberately he's worked to bring classical music to new and younger audiences who might otherwise never encounter it outside of a school assignment. My dad loves opera the way some people love football, deeply and specifically, and I grew up watching how a certain kind of classical performance can either feel completely closed off to outsiders or genuinely inviting, depending entirely on how it's presented. Bell has clearly chosen inviting, over and over, using his considerable talent and his Grammy-winning reputation to actually widen the audience for an art form rather than keeping it feeling exclusive. There's a real design choice in that, whether he thinks of it that way or not — deciding who a performance is actually for, and building the presentation around welcoming them in. Good composition should feel accessible even when the underlying craft is complex. Bell seems to understand that instinctively.
