Joseph Pulitzer (1847-1911)

Joseph Pulitzer understood something I spent 38 years trying to teach eight-year-olds: that telling the truth clearly, and doing it well, deserves real recognition. His name is on the Pulitzer Prizes now, which most folks know, but what I find more interesting is that he used his legacy to fund Columbia's journalism school, treating the craft of reporting as something worth teaching properly rather than something a person just picks up. I always told my third graders that words matter, that you'd better learn to write a true sentence before you learn to write a fancy one. Pulitzer built an entire institution around that same basic idea, elevating journalism and the arts into fields worthy of the country's highest public recognition. I don't know much about the newspaper business myself, beyond my little county-paper column, but I know good, honest writing when I see it, and I know it's worth someone spending a fortune to make sure future generations get taught how to do it right.
