Iris Apfel became a genuine fashion icon and interior designer in her later decades, celebrated for bold personal style and this incredible creative longevity that basically defied the industry's usual obsession with youth. As a designer myself, I think in composition and color constantly, and Apfel's whole visual language — big glasses, layered color, total confidence in clashing things that shouldn't work together but somehow did — reads like someone who fully understood her own aesthetic and never once apologized for it. There's something I find genuinely comforting about a creative career that got more celebrated with age instead of less, especially as a new mom watching my own creative output shrink to stolen twenty-minute windows between naps some weeks. Apfel proved a whole visual point built late in life, not early, which feels like a quiet rebuttal to how fast the design and fashion worlds usually discard people. I'd love to have even half that much unbothered confidence in my own aesthetic choices by the time I'm her age.
