Ida Tarbell (1857-1944)

Ida Tarbell did the meticulous, grinding reporting that basically invented modern investigative journalism, and I think about how much unpaid or underpaid digging that kind of work must have taken before anybody called it a real profession worth funding properly. I've worked enough jobs in my life — packing house, fast food, call center, retail, cleaning houses on the weekend — to know that the careful, thorough version of any job is almost never the one that gets rewarded fastest, it's usually the corner-cutting version that gets ahead quicker. Tarbell apparently refused to cut those corners anyway, decade after decade, until the meticulous approach became the standard the whole field eventually had to respect. I don't have a lot of patience for people who talk about 'hard work' without ever having had to grind through something nobody was watching or paying for properly, but Tarbell's whole career reads like exactly that kind of unglamorous, patient grind, and it's the kind of work ethic I actually recognize and respect.
