Hilda Solis (b. 1957)

Hilda Solis being the first Latina inside a U.S. president's cabinet, then spending her career as Secretary of Labor actually fighting for labor protections and environmental justice, hits close to home for someone who's currently stitching together school and three different part-time jobs with scheduling apps that cut my hours with zero warning. It's genuinely rare to see someone reach that level of institutional power and then spend it on the actual unglamorous stuff — labor protections, environmental justice — instead of just symbolic representation and a nice photo. I think about this a lot given my own summer fellowship being the first time I've had the luxury of just one job at a time in years; the instability itself shapes how you read everybody else's story, honestly. Solis clearly understood the instability from real angles and then used real power to try to fix pieces of it structurally. That's the version of representation that actually changes conditions for people instead of just looking good, and I don't think that gets said about her enough.
