Grace Hopper (1906-1992)

Grace Hopper developed one of the first compilers and helped create COBOL, and what I find most significant about that, as someone who spent 38 years in physics, is what it actually did: it made computers usable by people who weren't already fluent in machine-level code, opening the field to far more minds than would otherwise have had access. That's not a small technical footnote. That's the difference between a field staying a narrow guild and becoming something a much wider range of people, including women and students of color decades later, could eventually enter and contribute to. Hopper was also a U.S. Navy rear admiral, which tells you she had no patience for being underestimated in any room she walked into. I mentored a great many young scientists over the years, and I always pointed them to figures like Hopper — not because her story is inspirational in some vague sense, but because her actual technical work concretely opened doors that had been closed.
