Glenn Close (b. 1947)

Glenn Close has been nominated for the Academy Award eight times now, which is a number that ought to embarrass whoever keeps the trophy away from her, though I imagine she's made her peace with it better than I would've. Eight times is a career, not a lucky break — that's showing up and doing the work again and again, which reminds me of the substitute teaching I did before I got my own classroom, years of proving yourself before anybody handed you the thing you'd earned. I don't watch much of what passes for movies these days, prefer my Hallmark channel where things end nice and tidy, but I've caught enough of Miss Close's work over the years on the television to know real talent when I see it. Eleven grandchildren have tried to get me interested in all manner of modern actresses, and I tell them, find me one with that kind of staying power first. Some things are worth waiting on. She's proof persistence outlasts flash, every single time.
