Gladys Knight (b. 1944)

Gladys Knight has earned, quite fairly, the title 'the Empress of Soul' across a Grammy-winning career including 'Midnight Train to Georgia,' a song whose emotional precision I admire in much the way I admire an elegantly proven theorem — nothing wasted, everything earning its place. I do not often stray from classical music and opera in my own listening, a preference my late husband gently teased me about for thirty-eight years of marriage, but I recognize sustained excellence across genres readily enough. Knight's career has spanned decades without the kind of institutional recognition some of her contemporaries received earlier, which I note with the same qualifying instinct I bring to any claim in my writing — achievement and acclaim do not always arrive on the same schedule, and the delay says more about the evaluators than the evaluated. My son's art career recently sold out its first major gallery show, and Knight's long, deserved arc toward wider recognition reminded me, pleasantly, of that same feeling of overdue acknowledgment finally landing.
