Frederick Douglass (1818-1895)

Frederick Douglass built himself into one of the most influential orators and writers in American history starting from enslavement, which is about as far from "just one steady job like normal people" as a life can get, and I think about that phrase more than I probably should given my own three jobs. Teaching yourself to read and write under conditions built specifically to prevent that, and then turning those skills into a public voice powerful enough to shape the country's conscience, takes a kind of determination I don't see very often, in any era. I don't have a lot of patience for people who talk about hard work without ever having had to fight for the most basic tools other people are handed for free, and Douglass's story is close to the opposite extreme of that — someone who had to fight for literacy itself before he could fight for anything bigger. That's the kind of story that actually moves me, the ones built from genuinely nothing, not the ones dressed up to look that way.
