Francis Xavier (1506-1552)

Francis Xavier helped found the Society of Jesus and then spent the rest of his life carrying his faith clear across the world to places that had never heard of it before, at a time when traveling that far meant real danger and no guarantee you'd ever see home again. I'm Southern Baptist myself, different tradition entirely, but I recognize devotion like that when I see it, the kind that isn't loud about itself, just steady and willing to go wherever the work is needed. I think about that kind of commitment every time one of my former students goes off to do something hard and far from home — mission work, the military, nursing in some corner of the world I couldn't point to on a map. It takes a particular kind of person to leave everything comfortable behind for something they believe matters more than their own comfort does. Xavier's remembered five hundred years later because he lived that all the way through, not just when it was easy. That's a lesson worth sitting with a while, whatever pew you happen to sit in.
