Felipe Massa (b. 1981)

Felipe Massa spent over a decade competing at Formula One's highest level, which if you actually think about it is a long time to hold onto any job where you're only as good as your last performance and somebody younger is always coming up behind you. I know something about that kind of pressure, just at a much lower-stakes, lower-paycheck version of it — every job I've worked, from the packing house to gig delivery, comes with somebody cheaper or hungrier ready to take your spot the second you slip. Staying at the top level of a sport that competitive for that long means Massa did the unglamorous, repetitive work of staying sharp year after year, not just the one big flashy season people usually remember drivers for. I don't have a lot of patience for stories about talent alone getting anybody anywhere, in racing or otherwise, and a decade-plus career tells me there was real discipline behind whatever natural ability he started with. That's the part of his story I actually respect.
