Four Olympic golds across four different Games isn't talent, that's endurance, and endurance is a word I know something about after thirty-four years on a mill floor. Evelyn Ashford didn't just show up fast once, young, and cash in — she kept doing it across an entire career, through however many Olympic cycles that spans, and anybody who's ever tried to keep their body performing at a high level year after year knows that's a different kind of hard than a single great day. I've got bad knees and a bad back to show for my thirty-four years of one steady job, and I have real respect for anybody who puts that kind of mileage on their body in service of getting genuinely good at something and staying there. Track's not my sport, never has been, but 'four gold medals, four different Games' isn't a stat you can talk your way into. That's somebody who did the work, over and over, long after the first medal would've let most people coast. Around here we'd just call that a lifer.
