Eugene O'Neill won both a Pulitzer and a Nobel Prize for plays that are, by every account, emotionally heavy, powerful stuff that changed what American theater was even trying to do. I've listened to a fair number of history and literature audiobooks covering his work over the years hauling freight across this country, and what comes through consistently is that he wasn't interested in making audiences comfortable, he was interested in getting at something true, even when true was hard to sit through. There's a version of that same instinct out here on the road, honestly — the drivers who tell you the real story about a rough stretch of their life instead of the polished version are usually the ones worth listening to longest. O'Neill apparently spent his whole career doing that on purpose, refusing the easy, comfortable version of American life in favor of the harder, truer one. I hold two feelings about work that heavy — admiration for the honesty, and real respect for anybody who can sit with that much truth and still keep writing.
