Ethan Hawke (b. 1970)

Ethan Hawke has built an acclaimed, genuinely varied career — "Dead Poets Society," the "Before" trilogy, multiple Oscar nominations — while also writing novels and directing documentaries on the side, which is the kind of multi-hyphenate range that as a freelance designer and sometimes-illustrator I find deeply relatable, even at a wildly different scale of fame. There's a particular fear in creative fields of being boxed into one lane forever because it's what people first noticed you for, and Hawke seems to have quietly refused that box for decades, moving between acting and writing and directing without ever fully abandoning any of them. I think about this now especially, sleep-deprived with a seven-month-old, wondering whether my own design work will ever get to wander that freely again once I've climbed back out of the newborn fog. The "Before" trilogy alone, filmed across nearly twenty real years, is such a beautiful, patient kind of long-form artistic commitment that most careers never get the chance to attempt.
