Empress Joséphine (1763-1814)

Empress Joséphine has always struck me as a woman one could genuinely discuss horticulture with, which I mean as the highest compliment I know how to give. Beyond her rather more famous role as Napoleon's first wife, she cultivated an extraordinary garden at Château de Malmaison and had real, lasting influence over fashion in her day — the sort of soft power that history books tend to underrate because it doesn't come with battles attached. I have spent the better part of a decade restoring a public garden myself, and I can attest that the patience required to grow something beautiful and lasting is not remotely a lesser skill than the ones that get one's portrait painted in a crown. My own genealogical curiosity always wants to know what became of the gardens after their famous tenders passed on, and Malmaison's survival as a place people can still visit feels like the truer monument, more than the marriage ever was. Some legacies are best measured in roses rather than titles.
