Emilio Estevez became known through The Breakfast Club and The Mighty Ducks, part of that whole 1980s group they called the Brat Pack, and what I notice, maybe because I'm a nurse and I notice families out of habit, is that he comes from an actual Hollywood family — his father is a well-known actor too. There's a whole quiet story in that, about what it means to grow up watching someone you love do the work first, and then finding your own way to do something similar but still your own. My daughter is in medical school now, following a path that isn't mine but rhymes with it, and I think about that kind of inheritance a lot — not the fame part, just the part where a young person watches somebody they admire and decides, quietly, I could do a version of that too. Estevez built a career people still recognize decades later, in two different roles behind and in front of the camera.
