Ella Baker's whole story is basically a union organizer's story, even if nobody ever called her that specifically — she mentored generations of activists and helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, which means her real skill wasn't just leading from the front, it was building up other people to carry the work forward long after she'd moved on. I spent years as a grievance rep at the plant, and the job was never about being the loudest voice in the room, it was about organizing people, building trust, and making sure the movement outlasted any one individual, including me. Baker apparently understood that instinct at a much bigger scale than anything I ever dealt with — organizing a whole generation of civil rights activists instead of one shop floor. That kind of mentorship-driven organizing gets less credit than the famous speeches and marches, because it's mostly invisible work, done in meetings nobody photographed. But without organizers like that doing the unglamorous groundwork, none of the visible stuff holds together for long. I recognize that kind of labor when I see it, even from a completely different world than mine.
